The Georgia Department of Veterans Services

 

 

The Georgia Department of Veterans Services is a state agency whose mission is to inform veterans and their families about veterans’ benefits and to directly assist and represent veterans and their families In securing the federal and state benefits to which they are entitled. The State Board of Veterans Services recommends policy. procedure and projects to Commissioner Mike Roby, and through him controls GDVS policy The Board is comprised of 7 members appointed by the Governor. and confirmed by the State Senate. The department maintains an appeals division, field offices across the state, two veterans’ nursing homes, two veterans’  cemeteries and a public information division. Veterans Field Service Offices are accredited by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and are certified by eight national Veterans Services organizations. Field Services Officers attend a week-long annual training, and pass an exam to test their knowledge of veterans’ benefits to better support Georgia veterans.

 

 

The GDVS operates by advising veterans and representing them in applications for benefits at the state and federal levels. The GDVS can aid veterans with federal benefits such as compensation and pension, educational benefits under the GI Bill,  Dependents Indemnity Compensation. admission to healthcare facilities, insurance claims. loans. and much more Field officers can also help with applications for state benefits like drivers' licenses license plates, admissions to a state veterans home, and social security and welfare.

 

 

The Marietta Field Office on Powder Springs Street serves the estimated 47,000 veterans in Cobb County, including the residents of House District 44, which you have given me the privilege of serving. The Marietta office opened only four years ago and spends much of its resources on medical care and educational and vocational rehabilitation and employment.
