Spring Cleaning- Recycling in Cobb

Spring is upon us, and that means it is time to prepare for spring cleaning. There are many resources available in Cobb County to recycle a variety of household items from sensitive paper documents to large appliances. Improper disposal of electronics and appliances can pose a great risk to our environment, and dumping can keep our community from looking its best. Recycling large or small household items is often low-cost or even free, and a comprehensive list of recyclable items and where to bring them in Cobb is available at https://goo.gl/B3Gz8z. You can also search for an appropriate recycling facility near you at https://search.earth911.com/. Four year-round recycling drop spots are also available at local fire stations, which accept mixed paper, plastics 1-7, aluminum, steel cans, and flattened cardboard. These locations are listed at https://goo.gl/NQtseB.

Keep Cobb Beautiful plays a large role in protecting our local environment and preventing litter. KCB is a public education organization dedicated to improving waste handling practices in our community. It is a non-profit organization funded by the Cobb County Government, recycling revenues, and private contributions. Their mission is “Promoting stewardship of our communities through litter prevention, beautification, recycling and environmental education”. KCB will be hosting a multi-material recycling event for the Great American Clean Up on Saturday, April 21st from 9am-1pm at Jim Miller Park in Marietta where anybody can recycle electronics, appliances, textiles, Styrofoam, and other products at no or limited cost. The Great American Clean Up is a nation-wide program that aims to engage more volunteers and participants in public space cleanup, beautification and recycling events. For more information about this event and what specific objects may be recycled, visit https://goo.gl/NUumbj. For general inquiries please contact the Keep Cobb Beautiful office at (770) 528-1135 or keepcobbbeautiful@cobbcounty.org

Cobb EMC will also be hosting a free recycling event on the 21st from 8am to 1pm to celebrate Earth Day. Old phones, computer equipment, cameras, metal items and small appliances will be accepted and there will be on-site shredding for secure document destruction. For a full list of accepted and unacceptable items, and information about the location, please visit https://cobbemc.com/content/recycle.

Another local event that will be a great opportunity for spring cleaning is Keep Kennesaw Beautiful’s Electronics/Metal Recycling and Document Shredding event on Saturday, April 28th from 9am to 1pm. Items accepted include computer equipment, telephones, cameras, VCRs, microwaves, stereos, and copiers/printers. There should be no concern about data retrieval from computers or phones since everything collected goes to the crusher to be completely demolished. This event is free and open to all. For more information, visit http://www.kennesaw.com/electronics-recycling-and-paper-shredding-event/.

We are so lucky to have so many resources at our disposal in Cobb to make sure our waste is handled properly and responsibly. Illegal dumping not only hurts the environment, but also property values and our quality of life. Nobody likes an eyesore like litter piled up on the side of the road. To report illegal dumping and litter, fill out the form available at https://goo.gl/ZQjpwy.
